Submissions

QUILLMOOR is written by its readers. Contributors are not paid — nobody here is, including the editors — and pieces are chosen on whether they are useful, not on who wrote them.

What we publish

Site accounts, identification pieces, ringing and survey summaries, county records, historical notes from the archive, and comment. Length runs from a 400-word note to a 3,000-word site account, and the shorter pieces are more often read to the end.

What we do not publish

Equipment reviews of any kind. Trip reports from outside the region. Anything that names an active nest site of a schedule 1 species, or that would lead a reader to one. Sponsored or commissioned content, in any form, from anybody.

How to send it

Plain text or a word processor file to [email protected], with photographs as separate files rather than embedded. Tell us in the covering note whether the records have gone to the county recorder.

Copy deadlines are the first of January, April, July and October for the following issue.

Photographs

Photographs remain yours. We ask for one-time use in the journal and in the online archive of that issue, nothing else. We do not licence contributor images to third parties and we have turned down requests to do so.

Editing

We edit for length and clarity and send the edited text back before publication. If an edit changes what a piece claims, we will say so explicitly rather than assume you will spot it.

Records and responsibility

Publication is not submission

A record printed here has no county status. Send it to the recorder as well — the two processes are separate and both matter.

Sensitive species

We withhold locations for breeding raptors and other sensitive species as a matter of course, and will not negotiate on it.

Corrections

Printed in the following issue and added to the online text of the piece, with the date of the correction.
